Today the name Glenlivet distillery is known all over the world for its high level of taste and quality. But it started with only one man: George Smith. Born in 1792 on a small hilltop farm in the parish of Glenlivet in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, George Smith came from a family of "illegal" distillers. As a young man, his perseverance and determination were distinct and clear. Witness the fact that at the time he contributed to the sustenance of the family by working tirelessly as a carpenter, building stables, repairing fences and doing odd jobs in neighboring companies. In his spare time he cultivated a passion for distillation as a family tradition and thus produced a distillate with a unique style; chosen an optimal position for the source of pure water, the altitude and the geological conformation of the area, and above all far from the family distillery, George produced his Glenlivet whiskey. Such was his success that he was forced to shoot with a pair of hair-trigger guns given to him by the Laird of Aberlour to defend himself against envious competitors.
